Buenos Aires was founded twice:
The first one was in 1536, by spanish colonist Don Pedro de Mendoza, who established the first settlement. He named it "Ciudad del Espiritu Santo y Puerto Santa Maria del Buen Ayre". De second and definitive fundation was in 1580, by Juan de Garay, who named it "Ciudad de Trinidad".
In the 19th century, the port was point of arrival for the huge inmigrant crowd, promoted by Argentina to populate the country. Spanish, italian, russian, polish, etc; gave to this country the cultural eclecticism that makes it different.
During the 20th century, consecutive migrations - internal, in between latin countries and from the East - made of Buenos Aires a cosmopolitan city, where different cultures, people origin, and religions converge.
The city has different traditional "trips" to offer, as well as secret places; "El Colon" and experimental theatres, old book stores and new cultural centers. More than 100 museums, craftwork markets at the parks, and modern shopping malls. Historical "cafes". Tango, milonga, etc...
We suggest consulting the City Agenda (Agenda de la Ciudad), to check out the tourism offers, and put together a program depending on what you like or what you are seeking for, they have info on the different shows, etc. Another choice, is to read the cultural supplement "Cultura BA" that comes together with the journal "Pagina 12". You can get them for free at the information centers.
The green signs with the City Shield that are on the sidewalks have information on good shows, free or economical prices. They are organized by the Cultural Department of the city (Secretaria de Cultura).
At the bottom of those lists, you can find the contact info, telephone number or email address. You can also call the tourism information center or the city.
